The Biochemical Society offers an exciting programme of grants which has allowed members to meet and work with scientists from all over the world.

To maintain contact with Germany, former DAAD Research Grant or Study Scholarship holders with funding for more than six months and former DDR (East German) Scholarship holders who studied in Germany for at least one year can apply for a re-invitation. Funding is available for research and working projects at a state or state-recognised (public) university or a non-university research institution. Former graduates working outside the science sector can also apply for funding to cover a working stay at another institution in business or industry, administration, culture or media.

Students will not only study, but also visit political, government and corporate institutions to better understand the roles and functions of these institutions within the European Union. The program incorporates lectures and seminars given by qualified academics and practitioners from the European Union, in areas including the History and Politics of the European Union, EU Institutions, Business in the EU, the European Financial System, Business Cultures in Europe, Social Issues facing Europe, EU Enlargement, and EU-Australian Relations.

The European Research Council (ERC) has published today a call for proposals for the new funding initiative aProof of Concepta in order to support the commercialisation of ideas from current ERC projects.

Travel grants are awarded for short-term visits of up to 3 months. We provide a flat-rate contribution which may cover the expenses for travel, lodging and course fees.

The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from Australian professional scientists, including early career researchers, to visit Europe between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2010 to collaborate with European researchers. Proposals in any field of natural science, basic and applied, including mathematics and engineering science, will be considered. The applicant must be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident living in Australia at the time of submitting the grant application. Support will not be given when the primary purpose of the visit is to attend a conference.

The Vidi grant is targeted at researchers who have already gained several years of research experience at a postdoc level and whilst doing so have demonstrated that they can generate innovative ideas which they can independently and successfully develop. They may develop an innovative line of research and appoint one or more researchers for this purpose. The grant is for a maximum of a!800,000.

The Veni grant offers researchers who have recently gained their PhDs the opportunity to further develop their ideas for a period of three years. The grant is for a maximum of a!250,000.

The Vici grant is targeted at the senior researcher who has successfully demonstrated the ability to develop his or her own innovative line of research and the ability to act as a mentor for young researchers. Vici laureates may build up their own research group, often in anticipation of receiving a tenured professorship. The line of research shall be structurally embedded within the research institute. Experienced researchers may submit a preproposal at least 8 years and no more than 15 years after they have obtained their doctorates. The grant is for a maximum of a!1,500,000.

Regenerative medicine, a rapidly evolving and exciting field, can be defined as the process of creating living, functional tissues to repair or replace tissue or organ function lost due to age, disease, damage, or congenital defects. This can be done through a variety of approaches including the replacement of tissue function with synthetic constructs (artificial organs) and using cellular therapies such as stem cells or genetically modified cells to generate new tissues and organs.

The aim of this fund is to provide essential short-term travel and related support for research programmes where beam time has been scheduled and approved by peer review at a Programme Advisory (PAC) or similar committee, but funds to travel to and perform the experiment do not exist elsewhere. The fund is not restricted to experimental research; theorists are eligible to apply where there is an analogous need for travel support for a time-critical research activity.

Project grants provide funding for high-quality, hypothesis-driven projects, in the basic and clinical sciences, that are relevant to human and animal health.

Researchers in the Netherlands can apply for a visitors grant for the benefit of highly qualified foreign senior researchers holding a PhD for a stay in the Netherlands of a maximum duration of 12 months. The visit by the foreign researcher must be vital for the progress of a clearly delineated scientific research project which is in progress in the Netherlands.

The SNSFas international short research visits allow for researchers working in Switzerland to go abroad or for researchers from elsewhere to come to Switzerland. The visits can last between one week and three months and are limited to one person (the visiting fellow) going to one institute (the host institute). Both the visiting fellow and one person from the host institute (the host) are co-applicants of the pro-posal.

Award winners, scientists and scholars from all non-European countries, are invited to spend a period of up to one year cooperating on a long-term research project with specialist colleagues at one of the Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany. The stay may be divided up into blocks.

Fraunhofer Attract offers researchers with an exceptional track record the opportunity to develop their ideas towards application. A call for proposals is held twice a year.

Programme grants provide support for up to five years for internationally competitive research relevant to human and animal health. This longer-term funding gives researchers the opportunity to concentrate on a programme of research without having continually to seek funds from a variety of sources to maintain the group. The Wellcome Trust encourage holders of programme grants to pursue new ideas and avenues as they arise.

While the Australian Synchrotron (AS) provides world class facilities for the majority of Australian scientists requiring synchrotron access, it is recognized that certain methods are not currently available in Australia, and others are not planned for the near future. Accordingly, the AS has established the International Synchrotron Access Program (ISAP) to provide travel support to overseas synchrotron facilities, including the emerging fourth generation X-ray sources.
