TORONTO a Brandon Morrow pitched his second shutout in four starts, blanking the Mets on three hits and leading the Toronto Blue Jays over New York 2-0 on Saturday.

Morrow (5-2) struck out eight and walked one to win for the fifth time in six outings. He has three career shutouts, including a victory over the Los Angeles Angels on May 3.

Toronto matched its season high by winning its fourth in a row overall.

Morrow also benefited from a close call in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Scott Hairston led off with a walk and went to third on Mike Baxter’s one-out single. Baxter tried to stretch his hit into a double but was thrown out at second base by Jose Bautista.

Baxter and Mets manager Terry Collins argued with umpire Brian Knight that shortstop Yunel Escobar had failed to tag Baxter. Replays confirmed that Baxter should have been safe.

Instead, Morrow ended the game by getting Daniel Murphy to line out to shortstop.

New York lost for the sixth time in nine games and saw starter Miguel Batista leave with a sore lower back after two scoreless innings.

The right-hander warmed up for the third but had to be replaced by righty Jeremy Hefner, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo before the game.

Hefner (0-1) held the Blue Jays in check until the fifth, when ninth-place hitter Jeff Mathis singled with two outs. Kelly Johnson doubled to center and the ball got past Andres Torres for an error, allowing Mathis to score the opening run and sending Johnson to third. Escobar followed with an RBI single to right.

Mets third baseman David Wright, whose .409 batting average is highest in the majors, was held out of the lineup. Collins said Wright is still slowed by an illness and could be kept out of Sunday’s series finale.

Escobar and Johnson each doubled and singled.

Morrow set down the first seven batters he faced before Ronny Cedeno singled through the right side in the third. Unfazed, Morrow retired the next 13 Mets batters in order, a streak that ended with Lucas Duda’s two-out double to right in the seventh. Morrow promptly ended the inning by striking out Ike Davis.

NOTES: Mets INF Jordany Valdespin was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Hefner. … Mets OF Jason Bay (fractured rib) hit off a tee Saturday and remains on track to resume full batting practice Monday in Pittsburgh. … Blue Jays LHP Evan Crawford (back spasms) was not available. … Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero went 0 for 4 Friday in his first game action at extended spring training, splitting time between the outfield and DH.

Osi Umenyiora promised Saturday to buy back Giants great Lawrence Taylor his Super Bowl XXV ring.

The catch — the Giants defensive end will only bid to win the auction if he lands one million followers on Twitter.

Umenyiora put himself forward as an unlikely entrant early Saturday.

“All L.T, NYG, NFL FANS! If i get 1million followers, i will buy L.T’s ring back and give it to him,” he tweeted. “The 1,000,000th will give it to him. In person. I’m not joking.”

Umenyiora will need to pay a six-figure sum to land the 1991 ring, with the top offer after 24 bids standing at $108,378 with less than 12 hours to go before the auction ends Saturday night.

But his money looked safe with the Umenyiora approximately 970,000 followers off the one million mark at the same stage.

Umenyiora later clarified it would be a random follower that would return the ring to Taylor, after it was pointed out that those helping him get to seven figures on Twitter would be doing so without a shot at the main reward.

Taylor, meanwhile, was still coming to terms with the fact that his Super Bowl ring, which he won at the end of the 1990-91 season when the Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills in the title game, was even up for auction.

A longtime representative of Taylor told FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer on Friday that the former NFL linebacker had given the championship ring to his son TJ who could do whatever he wanted with it.

“Lawrence was in fact unaware of it but said he gave it to TJ and it’s his right to do what he wants with it. He’s fine with whatever TJ decided,” Mark Lepselter told Glazer.

TORONTO aJon Nieseas short outing hurt the Mets last night, and it could continue to affect the club for days to come.

Niese allowed eight runs in last nightas 14-5 loss to the Blue Jays and lasted just three innings. It was the shortest of several recent short starts from the rotation a Mets starters have only pitched seven or more innings in three of 16 games in May. Niese has both of the shortest outings in that stretch, also lasting three innings in a start against the Astros on May 1.

The rotationas recent inability to go deep into games stands out given the Mets are only eight games through a stretch of 20 consecutive games before their next scheduled off-day. It puts even more pressure on a bullpen that has already been called into action more often than manager Terry Collins would have preferred.

METS BOX SCORE

aOur bullpen has pitched very well, and [pitched] a lot this year,a Collins said. aItas a concern because you can wear them out early and weare going to need them throughout the season.a

In an ideal situation, Collins would probably have left Niese in a bit longer just for the sake of eating innings, but felt he needed to remove the left-hander since it was clear Niese didnat have his best stuff.

aI had to do it,a Collins said. aHis pitch count was getting up there and I was just making sure we could get him prepared for his next start.a

Manny Acosta, Ramon Ramirez, rookie Robert Carson and (of all people) catcher Rob Johnson pitched the remaining five innings for the Mets, with Acosta allowing five runs and Ramirez one more.

After last nightas performance, the Metsa bullpen ERA stands at 5.24, better than only the Phillies (5.34) among major league teams.

The Mets have some reinforcements on the way but not in the immediate future. Jenrry Mejia is on a minor league rehab assignment as he recovers from Tommy John surgery and is expected get some work out of the bullpen at Triple-A Buffalo. Right-hander Pedro Beato is recovering from a shoulder injury and is on the 60-day disabled list retroactive to March 26, making him eligible to return in about a weekas time.

Carson was making his major league debut last night, and allowed one walk in a scoreless inning. The left-hander was called up from Double-A Binghamton after D.J. Carrasco was designated for assignment Thursday.

Johnson made the first pitching appearance of his six-year professional career, moving to the mound after catching the first seven innings. He pitched a perfect eighth inning, retiring all three batters and even recording a strikeout of Blue Jays left fielder Eric Thames.

The Mets would count it as a bonus if they could get at least seven innings from either of their scheduled starters for the remainder of the this series. Converted reliever Miguel Batista is set to start today, having thrown seven shutout innings in his last start Monday against the Brewers. Dillon Gee, tomorrowas starter, has lasted at least 5 1/3 innings in all seven of his starts this season, but the right-hander has struggled to the tune of a 5.65 ERA.
